Q

What is Frontier’s policy regarding when we need to perform an autoland?

A

Whenever the visibility is below 1/2sm visibility or 2400 RVR, we must set up, brief, and fly the approach as an autoland, as long as all autoland requirements can be met. This does not preclude the PIC from flying a regular CAT I approach if not all CAT II/III requirements can be met.

Q

What do you need to do if you plan to perform an autoland, and the weather is at or above 800’ ceilings and 2sm visibility?

A

You need to advise ATC that you plan on performing an autoland so that they can keep the critical area clear. This is granted on an ATC workload permitting basis. If they are unable to keep the critical area clear you may still continue but be ready to take manual control and or go-around.

Q

Are we authorized to perform a single engine autoland approach?

A

Per frontier policy we are not, however the aircraft is certified to perform them. The captain may elect to use his emergency authority to perform a single-engine autoland approach if he deems that it’s the safest course of action. IF the captain elects to do this, the aircraft must be in config full.

Q

When would the autoland warning lights illuminate?

A

The autoland warning lights will be active below 200’RA and will illuminate if:

-Excessive ILS beam deviation (1/4 dot on the localizer, or 1 dot on the glideslope)
-The loss or disconnect of both autopilots
-ILS transmitter failure
-The difference between both RA indications is greater than 15ft

See FOM VOL 2, 6.30 pg. 13

17
Q

When would your flight director bars flash during an approach to land?

A

When there a problem with the vertical or lateral guidance, e.g. there’s excessive beam deviation, the flight directors bars will flash. If in IMC a go around should be initiated. Do not wait until you get the autoland lights or some other type of warning.

18
Q

What happens if you perform a go-around, low altitude, during an autoland approach and the landing gear touches down?

A

The A/P remains on, A/THR remains in TOGA, and the ground spoilers and auto brakes are inhibited.
