Is vitamin A a fat soluble vitamin or water soluble?

What are the types of vitamin A?
• Retinol
• Beta Carotene
What is Retinol?
• Pure vitamin A
• Easily absorbed by the body (liver)
EG: Egg yolk, cheese, milk & butter.
What is Beta Carotene?
• Pro vitamin A
• Not easily absorbed
• Must be changed into retinol (in the intestines) before it can be absorbed by the body.
EG: Carrots, pepper, spinach, & apples.
What are the functions of Vitamin A?
• Makes Rhodopsin that allows the eye to adapt to dim lights.
• Strong hair & skin.
• Growth & development of children.
• Beta-carotene = powerful antioxidant that stops free radicals from damaging body parts.
What are the deficiencies of Vitamin A?
• Night blindness: Eyes are unable to adjust to dim light & make out shapes in poorly lit areas.
• Eye infections: Cornea becomes dry & wrinkled.
• Rough, dry skin.
What are the properties of vitamin A?
• Insoluble in water.
• Heat stable
• Drying causes serious loss.

700 ug
What is the RDA of vitamin A for children?
500 ug
