What is the definition of a family?
A group of people who are related to each other by blood, marriage or some other connection such as adoption.
What is a nuclear family?
Parents and children.
What is an extended family?
Parents, children and other relatives.
What is a one parent family?
A mother or father and children.
What is a blended family?
Partners have children in previous relationships and then more in their current relationship.
What social changes are affecting modern family structure?
Change in tradition of father as breadwinner and mother as homemaker, more common to have fewer children, higher rates of divorce and marriage breakdown leading to more one parent families.
What technological changes are affecting modern family structure?
Entertainment technology such as the TV, energy saving equipment, worldwide communications, security technology, mass production decreasing cost.
What economic influences are affecting modern family structure?
Increased incomes leading to higher standard of living, unemployment increased, many families are dependent on social welfare, childcare/education are expensive for some families.
What are the functions of the family?
To provide for all physical needs of family members, to care for members of the family emotionally, to allow members of the family to develop socially.
What are the physical needs of a family?
Food, clothing, shelter, protection.
What are the emotional needs of a family?
Comfort and security, love and understanding.
What are the social needs of a family?
Personal relationships with other family members, social skills.
What responsibilities do parents have?
To provide for their children’s needs.
What are the rights of a child?
To love and understand, to grow up in the care of their family, education, protection from cruelty and neglect.
What are the rights of an adult?
To work, vote, avail consumer rights, sign legal documents, marry.
What are a child’s responsibilities?
To show respect for others, obey their parents and people in authority, learn how to behave in society.
What are adolescents’ responsibilities?
To be cooperative and dependable in the home, to participate in school well, to act in an acceptable way in society.
What are adults’ responsibilities?
To register to vote, provide needs for children, behave acceptably in society.
What are the results of a teen that acts responsibly?
Are role models to other children, have good relationships with family members, are reliable friends and positive influence on peers, are aware of the needs of others in their community.
What are the roles of a parent?
Caring for the needs of their children, providing financially for children, providing education for their children as learning begins in the home.
What are the roles of a child?
Behave in a way that is normal to their age group, teens are expected to act responsibly and independently, the influences of friends become stronger, this period can cause tension between teens and their parents.
What is gender?
Being male or female.
How are gender roles learnt?
By observing the world around us as we grow up.
What is the equal treatment of males and females called?
Gender equality/equity.
