What is marriage?
Socially and legally accepted union between two people of either opposite or same sex. They promise to be loyal and faithful to each other & live together.
Same sex marriage was legalized in 2015.
What are some marriage customs that vary by country?
Minimum age, choice of partners, number of spouses, and location where the couple is expected to live after marriage.
What is monogamy?
Can marry one person at a time.
Example: Ireland.
What is bigamy?
Can marry a second person while married to the first. It is illegal.
What is polygamy?
A man having more than one wife, often showing wealth.
Example: In Saudi Arabia.
What is polyandry?
A woman having more than one husband due to economic necessity.
Example: Nepal.
What is matrilocal?
Where the woman comes from.
What is patrilocal?
Where the man comes from.
What is neolocal?
A new location not linked to either the man or woman.
What are the legal requirements to get married in Ireland?
Age (18), mental capacity, notice (3 months), free to marry, and voluntary basis.
What are the rights and responsibilities of marriage?
Cohabitation, sexual relations, faithfulness, financial support, and joint ownership of children.
How does school prepare people for marriage?
SPHE teaches relationship bonding skills, Home Ec covers rights and responsibilities, and Religion discusses marriage variations.
How do pre-marriage courses prepare couples for marriage?
They discuss the meaning of marriage, positive and negative qualities, communication skills, and specific issues.
What are some causes of marriage breakdown?
Young age, unrealistic expectations, dissimilar interests, infidelity, and unemployment.
What are the options for marital breakdown?
Marriage counselling, family mediation, separation, divorce, and nullity.
What is marriage counselling?
A free and confidential service for couples with issues, run by trained counsellors.
It requires both spouses to attend and be serious about fixing issues.
What is family mediation?
A free service for couples who have decided to separate/divorce, allowing them to agree on custody, parenting, and assets.
What is legal separation?
Couple agrees on a separation agreement drawn up by a solicitor, including living apart and custody arrangements.
What is judicial separation?
Occurs when a couple cannot agree on terms of legal separation, often due to unreasonable behavior, adultery, or desertion.
What are the requirements for divorce in Ireland?
Couples must be living apart for 2/3 years with no possibility of reconciliation, and financial support must be provided for dependents.
What is nullity?
Two types: legal nullity allows remarriage, while church nullity has no legal standing.
Grounds include one partner being under 18 or impaired mental capacity.
