Energy Flashcards
1
Q
What are the functions of energy in the body?
A
- Working of the internal organs (e.g., heart, lungs).
- Production of heat & maintains body temperature (37°C).
- Growth in teens & children.
- Physical activities (e.g., running).
2
Q
What is the basal metabolic rate (BMR)?
A
The minimum amount of energy needed to keep internal organs (heart & lungs) working when the body is at complete rest.
3
Q
When do you measure BMR?
A
- When warm.
- At complete physical & mental rest.
- After fasting for at least 12 hours.
4
Q
What factors affect BMR?
A
- Age - Kids require more food as they are growing.
- Gender - Men require more food as they have more muscle.
- Size of body - Larger bodies need more food as they carry more weight.
- Job - A person in an active job needs more food due to increased movement.
- Pregnancy - More food is needed for both mother & fetus.
- Activity levels - More active individuals require more food.
5
Q
What are empty kilocalories?
A
Foods that only provide energy via sugar and have no other nutrients (e.g., lollies & gummies).
6
Q
What is energy balance?
A
- Food input = Energy output (BMR & activities).
- BMR is the minimum energy required.
- If more food is eaten than used, the body gains weight.
- If a person burns more calories than consumed, they lose weight.
