Viral Infections Flashcards
HIV
retrovirus infecting CD4 T helpers
causes AIDS
HIV Retinopathy
occurs in most patients with AIDS
asymptomatic
due to immune complex deposits
Signs of HIV Retinopathy
cotton wool spots
intraretinal hemorrhage
capillary abnormalities
Improving HIV Retinopathy
antiretroviral tx- HAART
Cytomegalovirus Retinitis
infection of retina and RPE by CMV
Type of patients likely to have CMV Retinitis
immunocompromised
Symptoms of CMV Retinitis
new onset floaters
blurred vision
Signs of CMV Retinitis
slowly expanding granular opacification of peripheral retina
retinal whitening with hemes and vascular sheathing
fibroglial scarring of RPE
Treatment for CMV Retinitis
antivirals- mainly oral
Progressive Retinal Necrosis
herpes zoster infection
bilateral
Patients with Progressive Retinal Necrosis
immunocompromised
Symptoms of Progressive Retinal Necrosis
rapidly progressive visual loss
Signs of Progressive Retinal Necrosis
yellow-white retinal infiltrates
rapid progression of infiltrates and necrosis; macula affected
retinal detachment
little or no vitreous inflammation
Treatment of Progressive Retinal Necrosis
IV and intravitreal antiviral agents
brain MRI and lumbar puncture required (increased risk of encephalitis)
Acute Retinal Necrosis
herpetic infection
HSV in younger
HZV in older
