Tractional Maculopathies Flashcards
Epiretinal Membrane
membrane that forms on top of retina
fibrocellular
unilateral if idiopathic, bilateral if pathology
“macular pucker”
Cause of Epiretinal Membrane
age 50+
idiopathic or secondary
Symptoms of Epiretinal Membrane
blurred distorted vision
“metamorphosia”
Signs of Epiretinal Membrane
initial- glistening membrane at macula, later thickens and becomes opaque
contraction distorts blood vessels and wrinkles retina
Mx of Epiretinal Membrane
monitor if minor
victrectomy with membrane peeling if intolerable distortion
Vitreomacular Traction Syndrome
when vitreous partially separates from posterior pole, with part still attached at fovea
Symptoms of Vitreomacular Traction Syndrome
progressive blurring/ distortion of one eye
flashes of light
Signs of Vitreomacular Traction Syndrome
macula appears wrinkled/ distorted
possible ERM or CME
Tx of Vitreomacular Traction Syndrome
none for spontaneous release
pars plana vitrectomy
Age Related Macular Hole
round area of missing retina at the macula in older patients
initially unilateral, second eye often gets later on
Causes of Age Related Macular Hole
Age (duh)
degenerative myopia
blunt trauma
Symptoms of Age Related Macular Hole
central distortion or scotoma
Stage 1a of Age Related Macular Hole
impending macular hole
loss of foveal depression
Stage 1b of Age Related Macular Hole
occult macular hole
gap in photoreceptors without full hole
Stage 2 of Age Related Macular Hole
small full thickness hole
often crescent shaped
