Benign Tumors Flashcards
Congenital Hypertrophy of RPE
CHRPE
benign neoplasm of RPE
typical or atypical
Typical CHRPE
common
not associated with systemic condition
unilateral and nonprogressive
Atypical CHRPE
rare associated with familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP) bilateral lesions scattered throughout fundus elongated oval with tail
Solitary Typical CHRPE Presentation
darkly pigmented, flat, round lesions with well defined borders
hypopigmented lacunae w/in lesion
larger- 1-6mm
Grouped Typical CHRPE Presentation
smaller- .1 - 2mm
in same quadrant
dark- bear tracks
non-pigmented- polar bear tracks
Familial Adenomatous Polyposis
FAP
genetic disease causing precancerous colorectal polyps in teens
progresses to cancer in all if untreated
Mx of CHRPE
monitor for typical
refer to GI specialist if atypical
Choroidal Nevus
benign tumor of choroidal melanocytes
can become malignant
Signs of Choroidal Nevus
oval/ round flat lesion w/ indistinct borders
slate gray
Diagnosis of Choroidal Nevus
red free filter- disappears
Mx of Choroidal Nevus
document- photos and OCT
watch for size/ thickness increase, or for orange coloration
Choroidal Melanocytoma
benign tumor of choroidal melanocytes near ON
variant of choroidal nevus
more in dark skinned ppl
can become malignant
Combined Hamartoma of Retina and RPE
rare congenital tumor composed of various cell types from retina and RPE
near optic disc
Signs/ Symptoms of Combined Hamartoma
visual distortion from dragging of macula or disc
exudation(NV for tumor)- more likely to cause vision problems
tumor near disc
Choroidal Hemangioma
benign choroidal vascular tumor
circumscribed or diffuse
kids to young adults
normally asymptomatic
