What kind of Vesicular or Pustular Rash Diseases are there?
- Chickenpox- very common and mostly benign
- Small pox- 1 case —> public health emergency
- Both present rash
-Pox- individual lesions that contain fluid
Signs and Symptoms for Chickenpox
- Fever
- Abundant rash after incubation period of 10-20 days
- Rash is more centralized on body
- Last 4-7 days
Skin lesions for Chickenpox
Progress from macules and papule to itchy vesicles filled with clear fluid:
- Encrust
- Fall off
- Heal completely or may leave small scare
- Can have a few to hundreds
What is Shingles: Herpes Zoster?
The Chickenpox virus that enters sensory ending of thoracic and trigeminal nerves
Signs and Symptoms of Shingles
- Characteristic asymmetrical distribution on skin and trunk or head of a painful rash
- Migrates down nerve ganglion to skin
- Lasts for several months

- Caused by Human Herpesvirus 3
- Enters respiratory tract attaches to mucosa
- Invades blood stream
- Virus to Skin cause cells to fuse and lyse
- Leasions
- Virus enters nerves ganglia and remain latent
Chickenpox transmission/Epidemiology
- Very contagious
- Droplet contact or inhalation aerosolized lesion fluid
Prevention of Chickenpox
Live attenuated vaccine licensed in 2006
Treatment for Chickenpox
- No therapy except from itchy discomfort
- Secondary bacterial infections use topical systemic antibiotics
- Severe use oral acyclovir
Signs and Symptoms for Smallpox
- Fever
- Abdominal and back pain
- Malaise
- Rash begins in pharynx and spreads to face
- Fluid filled
Causative agent for Smallpox
- Variola virus
- Hardy virus, last outside of body longer than most
Transmission/Epidemiology of Smallpox
- Droplet and Indirect contact
- Epidemic in 31 countries in 1970s

- No treatment
