- Called “mono” or “kissing disease”

A
- Epstein-Barr virus (EBV)
- Member of herpesvirus family
- Can be a number of bacteria or viruses

Signs and Symptoms for Mononucleosis
A
- Sore throat
- High fever
- Cervical lymphadenopathy
- Gray-white exudate in the throat
- Skin rash
- Enlarged spleen and liver

What is the incubation period for Mononucleosis?
A
-30 – 50 day incubation period

What is the hallmark of Mononucleosis?
A
- Fatigue is a hallmark of the disease.
- Strong, cell-mediated response is decisive in controlling the disease.

What about B and T cells in Mononucleosis?
A
-A notable sign is sudden leukocytosis, consisting initially of infected B cells and later T cells.

Transmission
A
- Direct oral contact
- Contamination with saliva
are the principal modes of transmission.

A
- Teens most at risk
- Infection before or after this period is usually asymptomatic

- More than 90% of the world’s population is infected with EBV
- In general, the virus causes no noticeable symptoms
