Veins of the leg Flashcards
What are the 2 groups of veins in the lower limb?
Deep
Superficial
What 3 deep veins merge to form the Popliteal vein?
Anterior tibial
Posterior tibial
Fibular
What are the 2 superficial veins?
Great saphenous
Small saphenous
Which side of the leg does the great saphenous vein travel on?
Medial then drains into the femoral vein
What side does the small saphenous vein travel on?
Lateral then drains into the popliteal vein.
What causes Varicose veins?
Backflow valves become incompetant and superifcial veins become dilated.
What can occur with chronic Varicose veins?
Pressure in venous system rises and can cause damage to cells. Blood may extrude into the skin. Ulcers can occur and pigmentation
How can you treat Varicose veins?
Surgical movement of Saphenous system
Reconstruction of valves
Tying off effected valves
What is Deep vein thrombosis?
Formation of a blood clot in the deep veins of the lower limb
What is the main complication of DVTs?
Pulmonary occlusion which leads to cardiopulmonary arrest
