Nerve damage Flashcards
What are the Seddon classifications of nerve injuries?
Neuropraxia
Axonotmesis
Neurotmesis (Worst damage)
What is Neuropraxia?
There is transient interruption to nerve conduction
Recovery without Wallerian’s degeneration
Temporary loss of function
What is Axonotmesis?
Loss of continuity between myelin sheath and axon
Wallerian degeneration occurs
What is Neurotmesis?
Severe stretch or lacerations
Myelin sheath, axon and connective tissue lose continuity
Wallerian degeneration
Loss of motor, sensory and autonomic function
Neuromas may form
What are Neuromas?
Growth/tumour of nerve tissue
What is the Sunderland system of nerve damage?
First to firth degree of damage
Similar to Seddon’s classification
What is Piriformis syndrome?
The Piriformis muscle irritates the Sciatic nerve
Get pain in the buttocks
What is Meralgia Paresthetica?
The Inguinal ligament presses on the Sciatic nerve
What is compartment syndrome an example of?
Anoxia
