What is Carpel tunnel syndrome?
A
Swelling within the carpel tunnel which presses on the median nerve (due to the narrowness) which causes pain in the hand.

Why do you get part sensation in the hand when there is damage to the median nerve at the Carpel tunnel?
A
Because a branch comes off the median nerve before it goes through the Carpel tunnel. This branch goes over the Carpel tunnel.
