Muscles of the anterior thigh Flashcards
What muscles are in the anterior compartment of the thigh?
Pectineus
Illiopsoas
Sartorius
Quadriceps femoris
What nerve innervates the muscles in the anterior compartment of the thigh?
The femoral nerve
What is the main actions of the muscles in the anterior compartment of the thigh?
Flexors at the hip
Extensors at the knee
What muscles make the Illiopsoas muscle?
Psoas major
Illiacus
What is the action of Illiopsoas?
Flexor of the lower limb at the hip joint
Lateral rotation
What innervates Illiopsoas?
Psoas major section innervated by anterior rami of L1-L3
Iliacus section is innervated by femoral nerve
What four muscles make up the Quadratus Femoris?
Vastus medialis
Vastus intermedius
Vastus lateralis
Rectus femoris
What is the main action of the Vastus muscles?
Extend at the knee joint
What is the action of Rectus femoris?
Flexes the leg at the hip joint
Extends at the knee joint
How can you test for damage to the Quadratus femoris/femoral nerve?
Patient lies in supine position, knee slightly flexed. Ask the patient to extend the leg against resistance, Quadratus femoris should contract and be observable.
What is the actions of the Sartorius muscle?
Flexion of the knee joint
Flexor, Abduction, lateral rotation at the hip joint
What is the action of the Quadriceps femoris?
Extension at the knee
What is the action of Pectineus muscle?
Adduction
Flexion
