vascular shunt mechanism Flashcards
what is vascular shunt mechanism?
vascular shunt mechanism is the redistrubution of blood during excercise
what is vasoconstriction and vasodilation?
vasoconstriction is when the artery walls get narrower and vasodilation is when the artery walls get wider
how does vascular shunt mechanism work?
there is an increase in blood flow to the working muscles due to the vasodilation of arteries around them and also a decrease in blood flow to the non essential organs that do not need it due to vasoconstriciton
for example during squats more blood would go to the hamstrings and quadriceps while less blood would go to the stomach
why do you get a stitch when excercising after eating?
you get a stitch if you eat before excercise because blood is directed away from the stomach during excercise and towards working muscles so the stomach can not break down the food
why is the blood directed towards the skin during excercise?
so the blood can cool down and you can sweat
