Connective tissues Flashcards
what are the 3 connective tissues?
cartilage, ligaments, tendons
where is cartilage located?
the ends of articulating bones
what are articulating bones?
give an example
bones that meet at a joint
e.g.at the elbow humerous/radius or ulna
what do ligaments connect to?
bone to bone
what do tendons connect to?
muscle to bone
what does cartilage do?
prevents friction between bones preventing the wear and tear of them
provides stability and support
acts as a shock absorber
this all means less pain when carrying out movements
what do ligaments do?
e.g give an example of one
stabilise joints preventing dislocation
e.g. ACL or MCL
what are ligaments made of?
bands of resilient tissue
what causes a ligament to rupture or tear?
putting them under too much pressure
what do tendons do?
give an example of one
they allow the body to move as the connnect the muscle to bone so when the muscle contracts the tendon is pulled which also pulls on the bone
they can act as a shock absorber
e.g. the achilles tendon
what causes a tendon to rupture or tear?
putting them under too much stress
what are the articulating bones at the hip knee and shoulder?
hip: pelvis, femur
knee: femur, tibia
shoulder: humerous, scapula
