Short term effects of excercise on the muscles Flashcards
what are the short term effects of excercise?
-muscle fatigue
-muscle soreness
-production of lactic acid
-increased muscle temperature
what is lactic acid?
a wast product of excercise
when is lactic acid produced?
during high intensity excercise when the body is respiring anaerobically
what are the symptoms of having a lactic acid build up?
muscle fatigue, soreness and pain
how does a build up of lactic acid affect performance?
is slows down the muscles and can stop performance
how does the build up of lactic acid affect the heart rate and breathing rateafter excercise?
it keeps the heart rate and breathing rate high because oxygen is needed to break down the lactic acid
how does lactic acid affect recovery rate
it slows it down
what does DOMS stand for?
delayed onset muscle soreness
what are DOMS?
the pain and stiffness felt several days after unacustomed or strenuous excercise
what causes DOMS?
tiny microscopic tears in your muscle fibres that your body responds to by increasing muscle inflammation which may lead to DOMS
how does a cool down help to prevent DOMS?
a cool down will gradually decrease the heart and breathing rate which means oxygen levels will stay higher so more lactic acid can be removed
