Muscle fibres Flashcards
what are muscle fibres?
muscle fibres are cells in the muscle that control the force and frequency of the muscle
what are the 2 types of muscle fibres?
slow twitch muscle fibres and fast twitch muscle fibres
describe slow twitch muscle fibres
slow twitch muscle fibres produce low amounts of force but can contract for a long period of time.
They also fatigue slowly as they make good use of the oxygen.
describe fast twitch muscle fibres
fast twitch muscle fibres can produce high amounts of force but can contract for a short period of time.
They also fatigue quickly as they make poor use of oxygen
give some example of when slow twitch muscle fibres are needed
long distance running
rowing
long distance cycling
(make sure you say its over a long distance)
give some examples of when fast twitch fibres are needed
sprinting
long/high/triple jump
sprint swim
