the circulatory system Flashcards
describe the pathway of blood starting from ther right atrium?
right atrium —–> right ventricle—–> pulmonary artery ——> lungs—–> pulmonary vein——> left atrium——> left ventricle——> aorta—-> body cells—->vena cava
what does the septum do?
separates oxygenated and deoxygenated blood
what muscle is the heart made from?
cardiac muscle
how is the the left side of the heart specialised?
it has a thicker wall/ more muscular than the right so it can pump blood to the entire body
what type of blood is on the right hand side of the heart and where does it deliver blood to?
deoxygenated blood is delivered to the lungs by the right hand side of the heart
what type of blood is on the left hand side of the heart and where does it deliver blood to?
oxygenated blood is delivered to the rest of the body by the left hand side of the heart
what are the valves?
say them in the order that follows the pathway of blood
tricuspid, semi lunar valve bicuspid and a semi lunar valve
what do valves do?
prevent the backflow of blood
how are red blood cells specialised ?
they have a biconcave disc shape to increase surface area
they have no nucleus so theres more space for the haemoglobin to bind and carry oxygen
what is haemoglobin?
an iron rich protein which can bind to 4 oxygens
what is the function of red blood cells?
and during excercise?
red blood cells deliver oxygen to the muscles
during excercise they allow the muscles to respire as they carry oxygen to workking muscles
what does cardiovascular mean?
cardio meaning heart and vascular meaning the circulatory network of blood vessels
what type of circulatory system do we have and what is it?
we have a double circulatory system
this means our blood flows through a network of blood vessels that form a double circuit. this connects the heart to lungs and then the heart to the other organs.
what is the cardiovascular system made up of and what are they?
the cardiovascular system is made of of two systems called the pulmonary and systemic systems
the pulmonary system involves the transpotation of blood between the heart and the lungs.
it starts from the right ventricle and ends at the left atrium
the systemic system involves the transportation of blood from the heart to the rest of the body
it starts in the left ventricle and ends in the right atrium
