Joints (synovial) Flashcards
what is a joint?
where 2 or more bones meet
what are the 3 types of joint?
-Synovial
-Slightly moveable
-Fixed
What is a fixed joint?
give some examples
fixed joints have no movement and they interlock or overlap
they are held together by tough fibre
e.g. cranium and ribs
what are slightly moveable joints?
give an example
slighlty moveable joints allow some movement
they have tough cartilage on the ends of bones which provide shock absorbtion and stability
e.g veterbrae
what are synovial joints?
give an example
synovial joints allow a ride wange of movement and are the most common joint
synovial joints let us do sport
e.g. knee hip shoulders or elbow
what are the 2 types of synovial joints?
-ball and socket
-hinge
describe the 2 types of synovial joints.
ball and socket:
ball and socket joints have a wide range of movement
examples of them are the shoulder and hip
hinge:
hinge joints only move in one direction like a door
examples of them are the elbow and knee
What is the function of the synovial membrane in a synovial joint?
the synovial membrane creates and secretes synovial fluid, a lubricant, into the joint to allow smooth movement
what is the function of synovial fluid in a synovial joint ?
synovial fluid acts as a lubricant to reduce friction so movement can be smooth
what is the function of the synovial capsule in a synovial joint?
a synovial capsule surrounds the synovial joint and holds bones together this keeps the joint stable so it dosent dislocate
