how are sprains and strains different?
sprains are tears to ligaments often caused by an overstretch
whereas strains are twists and tears to muscles or tendons
what is dislocation?
dislocation is movement of a joint away from its normal position
what is a fracture?
a fracture is a bone breakage often caused by impact
what is a blister
a blister is the bodys way of putting protection between skin and friction
what is spinal injury?
a spinal injury is damage to the veterbral column often caused by falls or intense pressure
what is a concussion?
a concussion is a bad head injury usually caused by impact
how can you prevent injuries?
give 5 ways
-warming up and cooling down
-personal protective equipment
-correct clothing or footwear
-lifting and carrying equipment safely
-appropriate level of competition
what is PPE?
give some examples
PPE is personal protective equipment,
equipment that protects you from physical contact
football-(shin pads)
hockey-(gum shield, shin pads, goal keeper kit)
rugby-(gum shield, scrum cap)
cricket-(helmet, gloves, box)
why is correct clothing and footwear different to PPE?
give some examples of clothing and footwear
appropriate clothing and footwear can only prevent injury it wont protect you whearas PPE can
netball-(netball trainers)
baskketall-(basketball trainers)
athletics-(running shoes, spikes)
what is the correct technique for lifting and carrying equipment?
-keep the load close to to the waist to reduce pressure on back and keep heavy side close
-feet apart with one leg slightly forward for balance
-avoid twisting your back
-get assistance when moving an item if its too heavy or large
when is it important to use the correct technique in sport?
-tackling someone in rugby
-tackling someone in football
-lifting a heavy weight
what injuries can occur from incorrect lifting and carrying technique?
back strains, or maybe broken limbs
