- used to set up the V before the cadence since they share a bass note
- always double the bass (5th)
- approach the chord from a predominant chord. keep common tones in the same voice
- write the chord on a strong beat to displace the dominant chord
- resolve the suspended tones downward by a step
- the resulting soprano voice will be a 1-7-1 or 3-2-1 leading to a PAC
