A
- a way of taking a key and sliding the scale around in the key
- seven different modes, for each not in the scale
- divided into three major modes and three minor modes (Locrian is so un-melodic that it does not sound major or minor)
- Ionian, Mixolydian, and Lydian relatively major
- Aeolian, Dorian, and Phrygian are relatively minor

- way to find different modes
- if you take Ionian you can find Mixolydian by lowering the seventh scale degree a half step. for Lydian you would raise the fourth scale degree in an Ionian scale by a half step
- if you take Aeolian you can find the Dorian by raising the sixth scale degree a half step. for Phrygian you lower the second scale degree of an Aeolian scale by a half step
