- we use roman numerals to indicate the harmonic function and location of the chord within a tonality
- upper and lower case indicates quality
- upper is major, lower is minor

- major - the order and case is as followed: I, ii, iii, IV, V, vi, viio
- natural minor: i, iio, III, iv, v, VI, VII
- harmonic minor is the same as natural minor but the raised 7th makes v to V and VII to viio
- this is common
- this also creates an augmented triad on the third of the scale
- melodic is most commonly use because composers want the changed tones at times but not all of the time
