A
  • chords that are constructed three notes stack on 3rds
  • A, C, E is a triad, A, C, D is not a triad
  • you can get a sense of the tonality of a scale degree by playing a triad for each note in the scale
  • the tonic in a C major scale would be C, e, G as a major triad. where D is the second scale degree and would have a minor triad (D, F, A)
  • when the notes are in a triad the first (bottom) note is the root note. the middle note is the third and the top note is the fifth of the chord
