types of cadence
A
- Authentic Cadence (AC)
- V-I
- two kinds of AC
- Perfect authentic cadence (PAC)
- – perfect octave between soprano and bass in tonic
- – both chords are in root position
- – tonic is approached by a step in the tonic
- – since it sounds so final, this is how pieces end
- Imperfect authentic cadence (IAC)
- anything that is an AC that is not a PAC such as chords are not root position or the soprano does not have the root of the tonic
- Half Cadence
- ends on a dominant chord (V)
- unlike the AC it does not need a preparation. if just needs to end on V
- the preceding chord can be a variety of chords
- the purpose is to continue the thought
