- chordal skips are skips in music that stay in tune with the chord
- in analysis we’ll see a series of chordal skips (an arpeggio) written as passing tones
- we can embellish the third using a chordal skip up and down again with a passing tone(s) between the skips
- you can also have two skips with a neighbor tone in the middle to fill it in
- with a P5 leap you can fill it in with passing tones
- we can also combine passing tones and neighbor tones to further embellish a piece
- a common use is a neighbor to leading into a series of passing tones
- anticipation (ANT) in music is when we have a note land early and is held to create the idea of needing another note to fill in the next chord
- suspension is when we have the early note resolve down
- retardation is when the early note resolves up
- the pedal point is the note that is sustained (usually the bass)
- to analiys you can draw a line to signify where the pedal starts and stops
