Q

sequences

A
  • popular compositional technique
  • repetition of an idea or pattern that is the same or similar
  • large motives can be called a sequence pattern, but it is a sequence just the same
  • the rhythm/interval pattern stays the same but the pitches move to a new set

Q

types of sequences

A
  • Melodic Sequence: repetitions that begin on different pitches
    • the melody is the same in terms of rhythms and intervals but is has a new starting pitch
    • there is an interval indication for the soprano and bass interval. that term is called Linear intervallic pattern (LIP)
  • – means that even though the starting note may change, the soprano-bass interval does not
  • Harmonic Sequence: The function of the harmonies also gets repeated. they move in a predictable pattern
    • relationship stay the same relative to themselves, even though the pitches change
    • an example of a harmonic pattern is root movement of fifths
  • – D-G-C-F-Bb
  • — down a 5th up a 4th
  • we can further clarify the type of sequence by noticing how strictly is it transposed
  • Diatonic Sequence: sequence that stays within the key signature. restates the same generic intervals but allows for quality shifts )M/m 3rd) etc.
    • same ideas, but the key signature dictates the quality of intervals and allows them to change
  • Chromatic Sequence: repeats the idea with the identical specific interval size. basically transposition
    • since they move around so strictly with the intervals, it sounds like it is changing keys

Q

how to analyze and identify sequences

A
  • you need to identify:
    • what type of motive is the pattern based on
  • – melodic, harmonic, etc.
    • interval of restatement
  • – first note to first note
  • – finding that intervallic relationship
  • – moving down or up?
    • if motive is transposed, the interval should be indivated
  • – this is known as the level of transposition
  • — “we are moving it by ___ down”
  • — space is filled in by P5, m3, etc.
