Name the three muscles in the thenar compartment of the hand. What is their combined primary function?
Abductor pollicis brevis, Flexor pollicis brevis, Opponens pollicis. Together, they produce opposition of the thumb.
What is the common origin of all muscles in the thenar compartment of the hand?
Flexor retinaculum.
What is the innervation to the muscles of the thenar compartment?
Recurrent branch of median nerve.
What is the name of the deep, fan-shaped muscle in the hand? What is its origin and insertion?
Adductor pollicis. Origin at the 2nd and 3rd metacarpals and capitate. Inserts at the 1st proximal phalanx.
Name the three muscles of the hypothenar compartment of the hand.
Abductor digiti minimi. Flexor digiti minimi brevis. Opponens digiti minimi.
Which lumbricals are bipennate, and which are unipennate?
1st and 2nd are unipennate. 3rd and 4th are bipennate.
What is the function of the lumbricals?
Flexion of the MCP joints, extension of the 2nd-5th interphalangeal joints. (Lleyton Hewitt Lumbricals)
How many dorsal interossei muscles are there? What is their function? How many palmar interossei? And their function?
3 palmar unipennate (adduct fingers), 4 dorsal bipennate (abduct fingers)
