Cranial Nerves (1.5) Flashcards
Name the four cranial parasympathetic ganglia.
Ciliary
Pterygopalatine
Submandibular
Otic
What is the relationship between the sensory divisions of the trigeminal nerve and the cranial parasympathetic ganglia?
All sensory divisions of the trigeminal nerve PASS THROUGH the parasympathetic ganglia, but they do not synapse there. They extend to the trigeminal ganglion, where their cell bodies lie.
Name the cranial nerve synapsing in each of the parasympathetic ganglia.
Ciliary - CN III
Pterygopalatine - CN VII
Submandibular - CN VII
Otic - CN IX
Which sympathetic fibres PASS THROUGH, but do not synapse, at each of the parasympathetic ganglia?
Superior cervical sympathetic nerves (coming from the carotids).
Which is the only division of the trigeminal nerve that has motor function? Which muscles does it innervate?
The mandibular division.
Masseter, Temporal, Pterygoids, Mylohyoid, Anterior belly of digastric, Tensor tympani.
In which part of the brainstem does each cranial nerve have its nucleus?
1st four above the pons
2nd four at the pons
3rd four below the pons
Which nerve conveys taste sensation from the anterior 2/3 of the tongue?
Facial (VII)
Which nerve conveys taste sensation from the posterior 1/3 of the tongue?
Glossopharyngeal (IX)
What is the name of the sensory ganglion for CN VII ?
Geniculate ganglion.
What is innervated by the parasympathetic fibres from the ciliary ganglion?
Ciliary muscle and sphincter pupillae of iris.
What is innervated by the parasympathetic fibres from the pterygopalatine ganglion?
Lacrimal gland.
What is innervated by the parasympathetic fibres from the submandibular ganglion?
Sublingual and Submandibular glands.
What is innervated by the parasympathetic fibres from the otic ganglion?
Parotid gland.
