Head - Parts of the Brain (1) Flashcards
What are the components of the diencephalon?
The diencephalon is the central core of the brain, and it includes the right and left thalami (connected by the interthalamic adhesion) and the hypothalamus.
What are the components of the brainstem?
Midbrain, Pons, Medulla. (from rostral to caudal)
What is the cerebral falx?
This is the strong fold of dura mater that forms a vertical (sagittal) wall between the right and left hemispheres, lying in the longitudinal cerebral fissure.
Name the major fissures and sulci of the brain, and explain which lobes they are boundaries for.
Longitudinal cerebral fissure – separates left and right hemispheres
Central sulcus – separates frontal and parietal lobes
Lateral sulcus – separates temporal lobe from parietal and frontal lobes
Parieto-occipital sulcus – separates the occipital and parietal lobes
What is the cerebellar tentorium?
This is an infolding of dura mater that forms a horizontal (transverse) wall between the occipital lobe and the cerebellum.
Name the components of the cerebellum.
The cerebellum has a left and right lobe, separated by the vermis, which runs in a sagittal plane down the centre of the two lobes.
