Back - Nerves of the Vertebral Column (1) Flashcards
What is the nerve supply to zygapophysial joints (facet joints)?
Medial branches of the adjacent posterior rami.
What is the nerve supply to most of the structures within the vertebral canal?
The (recurrent) meningeal branches of the spinal nerves.
Explain the origin of the (recurrent) meningeal branches of the spinal nerves.
These are the only branches that arise directly from the mixed spinal nerve, before it divides into posterior ramus and anterior ramus.
Explain the course of the (recurrent) meningeal branches of the spinal nerves.
After leaving the mixed spinal nerve, they turn back into the IV foramina, receiving communicating branches from the nearby grey rami communicantes, and into the vertebral canal.
Name 6 structures that are innervated by the (recurrent) meningeal branches of the spinal nerves.
1) Periosteum of the vertebral arch
2) Dura mater of the spinal cord
3) Blood vessels of the vertebral canal
4) Posterior longitudinal ligament
5) Ligamentum flavum
6) Anuli fibrosi of the posterior and posterolateral aspect of the IV discs
