Lower Limb - Lateral Compartment of the Leg (1) Flashcards
What is another name for the lateral compartment of the leg?
Everter compartment.
Name the two muscles of the lateral compartment.
Fibularis Longus
Fibularis Brevis
Describe the proximal attachments of the muscles of the lateral compartment.
Both attach to the fibula. Fibularis Longus attaches to the superior two thirds. Fibularis Brevis attaches to the inferior two thirds.
Describe the course of the Fibularis Longus tendon, going into its distal attachment.
The tendon passes posterior to the lateral malleolus, then beneath the foot, crossing to the medial side, attaching to the base of the 1st metatarsal.
Describe the course of the Fibularis Brevis tendon, going into its distal attachment.
The tendon passes posterior to the lateral malleolus, then attaches to the base of the 5th metatasal.
What is the innervation to the muscles of the lateral compartment? Where does this nerve come from?
Superficial fibular nerve (a branch of the common fibular nerve, which is a branch of the sciatic nerve)
What is the blood supply to the lateral compartment?
Superiorly: perforating branches from the anterior tibial artery.
Inferiorly: perforating branches from the fibular artery.
