Head - Ventricular System of the Brain (1) Flashcards
What connects the lateral ventricles to the third ventricle?
The Interventricular foramina. (also called the Foramina of Monro)
What connects the third ventricle to the 4th ventricle?
The cerebral aqueduct.
What is the name of the area containing CSF that extends caudally from the 4th ventricle?
Central canal of spinal cord.
Through which anatomic structure does CSF enter the subarachnoid space?
Through three apertures in the 4th ventricle: two lateral aperutures (also called the Foramina of Luschka) and one medial aperture (also called the Foramen of Magendie).
Describe the route traveled by CSF from its production to all the CNS tissues.
Produced in the choroid plexus of the lateral ventricles (and the 3rd and 4th ventricles, and 1% in the central canal), it passes through the interventricular foramina to the 3rd ventricle, then through the cerebral aqueduct into the 4th ventricle. From there it either continues into the central canal of the spinal cord, or it exits via the medial or lateral apertures into the cisterns surrounding the entire brain and spinal cord.
