A

It is not the most accurate system of measurement, but it is familiar to patients in the United States and therefore is useful in communicating health information.

Q

Which system is more accurate, the metric systme or the imperial system

A

The metric system of measurement is more accurate than the imperial system, and around the world, most people find it much easier to use. Because it is based on multiples of 10, it seems easier to convert between units within the metric system.

18
Q

the Metric Conversion Act of 1975

A

Here in the United States, the Metric Conversion Act of 1975 was supposed to get all our systems over to metric, but though many industries did start to use some metric measurement, most Americans never got the hang of it.

19
Q

There are just three basic units you need to know to use the metric system. gram

A

For weight or mass, the fundamental metric unit is the gram (g).

19
Q

There are just three basic units you need to know to use the metric system. Meter

A

. A meter (m) is the fundamental unit of length in the metric system.

20
Q

There are just three basic units you need to know to use the metric system. liter (l)

A

The metric unit of volume or capacity is the liter (l). With these three simple units, you can measure anything in the metric system.

28
Q

For healthcare workers, there is one very important relationship to know in the metric system.

A

1 milliliter = 1 cubic centimeter = 1 gram
What this means is that one milliliter (mL) of liquid can fit into one cubic centimeter (cc) of space and weighs one gram. You may have heard someone, in real life or on a hospital drama on television, say “give him 10 ccs of xyz medicine, STAT!” So, the patient needs 10 ccs of the medication, which is equal to 10 milliliters or 10 grams, immediately. This relationship between the different types of units within the metric system is so important because it is used often in measuring dosages, and all healthcare workers need to know how to measure medications correctly.
