When you form habits as an adolescent, the likelihood that you will become addicted and continue to use a harmful substance is higher. Studies have shown that most adults who are smokers started smoking before the age of 18.

Even if you only drink alcohol occasionally there are still risks, including interference with brain development, poisoning, poor coordination leading to injury and accidents, impaired judgment leading to risky sexual behavior, school problems, and legal problems.
What are the short term health risks of alchool
- Injuries like motor vehicle crashes, falls, drownings, and burns.
- Violence such as homicide, suicide, sexual assault, and intimate partner violence.
- Alcohol poisoning
- Reproductive health like risky sexual behaviors, unintended pregnancy, sexually transmitted diseases (including HIV), miscarriage, stillbirth, and fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASDs).

- Chronic diseases such as high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke, liver disease, and digestive problems.

Drugs that are injected introduce the risk of blood-borne diseases like hepatitis and HIV.
Substances like tobacco, alcohol, and drugs can have very bad short- and long-term effects on the health of the body and the mind.
All of these substances can contribute to serious diseases such as cancer, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), heart disease, diabetes, periodontitis (gum infection), stroke, seizure, and mental health problems.

Smokers experience decreased lung capacity, bad breath, chronic cough, bronchitis, stained teeth, and have an increased risk of dying in a fire.

Drinking alcohol can cause serious health problems, but even in the short term, drinkers experience slurred speech, vision impairment, poor coordination, extreme mood shifts, stupor, slowed breathing, and memory lapses.
