Unit 1 Lesson 5: Emergency and Disaster Response Flashcards
Even with any specific instructions for a particular facility, there is a handy acronym to use to remember what to do in a fire:
RACE
What does the R in Race stand for
R: Rescue Patients and Employees
Remove patients from the area and, if possible, close the door to contain the fire. Any employees who are in immediate danger should also be moved away from the area.
What does the A in Race stand for
A: Activate the Fire Alarm
Activate the nearest fire alarm and report the location and type of fire to the appropriate people in your facility. Don’t forget to identify yourself.
What does the C in Race stand for
Confine the Fire
To confine the fire to a smaller area, close all doors around the fire, also depriving the fire of additional fuel—oxygen. Turn off any oxygen valves in the area.
What does the E in Race stand for
Extinguish the Fire
If the fire is contained and small, extinguish it by covering it with non-flammable materials or use the correct type of fire extinguisher. If the fire cannot be easily extinguished, then wait for the fire department to come and extinguish the fire.
No matter what the emergency, what will workers need to knwo
No matter what the emergency, workers will need to know what to do to keep patients, other staff, and themselves as safe as possible.
Every facility should have an emergency action plan. What is a emergeny action plan
a written document required by OSHA to organize employer and employee actions during an emergency.
What does the emergency action plan list
The emergency action plan will list all the local emergency contact numbers, the evacuation routes, the emergency managers by area of the building, a plan of action for each type of possible event, and a training plan so that personnel will be prepared to perform their role in an emergency.
In any emergency, the first priority is to
protect life
In any emergency, the first priority is to protect life. Once that is accomplished, the focus can shift to
stabilizing the incident.
To protect the life safety of people can require one of four possible actions:
evacuation, sheltering, sheltering-in-place, or lockdown.

safe location in coordination with authorities and other staff members.
