Q

What is a fraction

A

A fraction is just a part of a whole number and is usually written with one number “over” the other one, with a “/” sign between them. The top number is called the numerator, and tells you how many parts in the fraction, while the bottom number, or denominator, tells you how many parts the whole is divided into. The fraction 5/8 indicates that the whole is divided into eight parts, and the fraction indicates five of those eight parts.

Math in healthcare

A

You will use basic operation in math to perform very important calculations in healthcare. You may be figuring out how many pills to give to equal the correct dosage of a medication. You may need to divide a day into equal units, so you know when to give one of five evenly spaced doses of medication. You may need to figure out how much liquid a patient has ingested by subtracting what is left in the glass from what was there to start with. Basic operations have many applications in healthcare. For all of these reasons, brushing up on your arithmetic is a terrific idea.
