Unit 4: Gestalt Psychology and Monocular Cues Flashcards
Things that are near each other seem to be grouped
Proximity
Similar things tend to appear grouped together (both visual and auditory stimuli
Similarity
Points that are connected by straight or curving lines are sen in a way that follows the smoothest path
Continuity
When we see connections in disjointed objects (like a constellation)
Connectedness
Things are grouped together if they seem to complete some entity. We fill in gaps to creat a whole object.
Closure
The organization of the visual field into objects (the figures) that stand out from their surroundings (the ground)
Figure Ground
Parallel lines converge and give us the perception that it is farther away
Linear Perspective
Larger image on retina is perceived as closer and smaller image is perceived as farther away; comparing 2 objects that are similar (people)
Relative Size
Images at the top of the visual field tend to be viewed as farther away
Relative Height
Images that appear to be blocked are perceived as farther away
Interposition
The amount of light cast on the retina - hazy and shaded are further away; bright light are judged to be closer
Light and Shadow
Detail helps us perceive it as closer because we can still see detail
Texture Gradient
