Unit 3_Cranial Nerves Flashcards
How many cranial nerves are there?
12
What cranial nerve is sensory and controls smell and is attached to the brain? It also passes through the Cribriform foramina.
Olfactory - CN I
What cranial nerve is sensory and controls vision and is attached to the brain? It also passes through the Optic canal.
Optic - CN II
What cranial nerve is motor and controls eye movement that provides somatic and parasympathetic control? It also passes through the Superior orbital fissure.
Occulomotor - CN III
What cranial nerve is sensory and motor and controls chewing and facial sensation, including to your face, scalp and teeth? It also provides dermatomes of face in 3 areas:
V1 - Ophthalmic (Superior Orbital Fissure)
V2 - Maxillary (Foramen Rotundum)
V3 - Mandibular (Mandibular)
Trigeminal - CN V
What cranial nerve is motor and controls eye movement in the lateral rectus muscle to gaze sideways? It also passes through the Superior orbital fissure.
Abducen - CN VI
What cranial nerve is motor and sensory and controls facial expressions, taste (anterior two-thirds of the tongue), tear production? It also passes through the Internal acoustic meatus.
Facial - CN VII
What cranial nerve is sensory and controls hearing and balance? It also passes through the Internal acoustic meatus.
Vestibulocochlear - CN VIII
What cranial nerve is motor and sensory and controls swallowing, taste (posterior one-third of the tongue)? It also passes through the Jugular foramen.
Glossopharyngeal - CN IX
What cranial nerve is motor and sensory and controls autonomic control of the heart, lungs, and digestive tract? It’s also the longest cranial nerve. It also passes through the Jugular foramen.
Vagus - CN X
What cranial nerve is motor and controls shoulder shrugging and neck muscles (sternocleidomastoid and Trapezius)? It also passes through the Jugular foramen.
Spinal accessory - CN XI
What cranial nerve is motor and controls tongue movement/the bottom muscles of the tongue? It also passes through the Hypoglossal canal.
Hypoglossal - CN XII
What cranial nerve is motor, controls eye movement and handles the superior oblique muscle to give us a gaze that is lateral and inferior. It also passes through the Superior orbital fissure.
Trochlear - CN IV
