UNIT 28 Exercise and Pregnancy (week 8) Flashcards
A growing body of evidence exists to support the belief that a pregnant woman can benefit in numerous ways from sound exercise. Exercise can:
- Reduce the severity and frequency of back pain
- Enhance prenatal weight management efforts
- Help pregnant women counteract the feelings of stress or anxiety
- Improve digestion and reduce constipation
- Help provide an enhanced level of energy to facilitate the ability to perform the activities of daily living
- Help reduce postpartum belly
conditions that should preclude a pregnant woman from exercising are
coronary heart disease, ruptured membranes, incompetent cervix, premature labor, multiple gestation, vaginal bleeding, placenta previa, and a history of three or more spontaneous abortions or miscarriages
phlebitis:
The inflammation of a vein, usually in the legs. It most commonly occurs in superficial veins. Phlebitis often occurs in conjunction with thrombosis and is then called “thrombophlebitis” or “superficial thrombophlebitis”.
palpatations:
A perceived abnormality of the heartbeat characterized by awareness of heart muscle contractions in the chest: hard beats, fast beats, irregular beats, and/or pauses.
Throughout the exercise period, a pregnant woman should:
- Stay adequately hydrated
- Keep the intensity level of the exercise at a moderate level
- Avoid wearing clothing that is impermeable to water while exercising
- Be acutely sensitive to the environmental conditions that exist at the time of the exercise session (particularly the ambient temperature and relative humidity levels)
- Keep the duration of the exercise session to 30 minutes or less to avoid impairing blood flow to the her uterus
- Avoid prolonged (i.e., longer than five minutes) bouts of exercise in the supine (lying on her back) position
- Avoid over-stretching while exercising or performing exercises in a ballistic (i.e., jerky or bouncy) fashion
- Eat a nutritionally sound diet (i.e., consume sufficient amounts of carbohydrates) to ensure adequate levels of glucose are available
If a pregnant woman did not exercise prior to pregnancy, then it’s important to increase weight-bearing activities to lower the risk of injury
