What does the Nursing and Midwifery Council do?
Regulates nurses and midwives in the UK
How does the NMC regulate nurses and midwives?
- Ensuring nurses and midwives have the right qualifications and skills
- Setting standards of practice and behaviour
- Requiring nurses and midwives to challenge discrimination, and review practise yearly
What does the Royal College of Nursing do?
Represents nurses, midwives and healthcare assistants in the UK by:
- setting out the principles of nursing practice, and nurse’s roles and responsibilities in safeguarding.
- ensuring accountability of practitioners, promoting and continuing professional development (CPD)
- supporting diversity in nursing
What is the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC)?
The HCPC protects the public by keeping a register of health and care professionals who meet the standards required.
What standards does the HCPC set for health and care professionals?
Sets standards for:
- conduct and ethics
- performance and efficiency
- character and health
- education and training
What is the General Medical Council (GMC)?
An independent organisation that helps to protect patients and help improve medical education and practise across the UK.
How does the General Medical Council (GMC) work?
- decides which doctors are qualified to work, oversees UK medical education and training
- sets the standards which doctors need to follow, and makes sure they continue to meet these standards
- takes action to prevent putting the patient’s safety or the doctors at risk
Why were policies and procedures designed?
to protect service users with specific needs by meeting their specific needs by qualifies professions, and to also protect those who deliver services in their setting.
What are the purposes of policies and procedures?
- needs of children and adults are met and respected
- human rights are respected and upheld
- interventions and responses are appropiate, timely professional and ethical
- all decisions and actions fit within the legislation present at the time
