What is empowerment?
Giving individuals information or support so they can make informed decisions and make choices about their lives in order to live independently as much as they can
How can young children be empowered?
Young children could be empowered by providing them information about their illness, and the treatment which they would be receiving etc. As they can’t make any decisions by themselves, therefore, are too young to be empowered, this is the best way to empower them.

What do inspectors look for when they carry out inspections?
1-Observe service delivery
2-Review records
3-Look at documents and policies
4-Take action to where there could be improvements made
What happens after the inspection?
The service provider is graded, and improvements or warnings would be given within a time frame, they may be asked to change their working practises or implement policies
worst case they could face criminal prosecution
what actions could be made in response to inspections?
Write an action plan, may improve their partnership working, may ensure changes to working practices
What ways could a hospital improve after their inspection?
A hospital could improve by:
- Improving their hygiene e.g. washing their hands
- Improving their safety e.e. replacing equipment that are damaged
- complete their documents accurately, handle information professionally
What ways could an early year’s setting improve after their inspection?
They could improve by:
- Keeping safe e.g. by replacing unsafe equipment
- Meeting individuals needs, e.g. the needs of the children and their parents
- Provide the right learning environment e.g. a rich learning environment to challenge their learning and stimulate their learning
What is the Data Protection Act 1998?
An act that controls how personal information is used by organizations or businesses or the government.
What does the DAta Protection Act 1998 say?
Data must be:
- used fairly and lawfully
- used for limited or specific purposes
- used in a way that is relevant and not excessive
- must be accurate
- kept for no longer that is necessary
- handled according to peoples data protection rights
- kept safe and secure
Relating to the Data Protection Act, what is there a strong legal protection for?
for your:
- ethnic background
- political opinions
- religious beliefs
- health
- sexual and health preferences
- criminal records
What are the possible risks in a health care setting?
- abuse
- inadequate supervision of facilities
- lack of hygiene, lack of illness prevention
- poor first aid facilities
How can a health care setting manage risks they could face?
- use risk assessments to minimize the risk of harm
- ensure staff are trained and that there is continued training when necessary
- ensure DBS checks are done
- regular and evidenced checks of facilities
examples of mitigating risks in health and social care
e. g. specialist equipment - ensure staff are properly trained to handle equipment safely
e. g. adequate supervision and support - ensure staff provide the necessary support to those who need it to prevent harm
