UNIT 1 - PIAGET Flashcards
Define the sensorimotor stage (0-2 years)
Sensorimotor, infants learn about their environment to develop schemas (concepts) by using their senses
Define the preoperational stage (2-7 years)
- Children begin to learn the environment by using symbolic behaviour through representational words, symbolic drawing etc
- can think logically
Define Concrete operations stage (7-11 years)
- use practical resources to help them understand the world
- use logic to understand what they see
Define formal operations stage (11-18 years)
-Are capable of abstract thought, rational thought and problem-solving
Give one criticism of Piaget’s cognitive development stages
Piaget has underestimated that with support a child can move more quickly to the next stage of development
List the 4 stages of Piaget’s schematic development theory
Assimilation
Equilibrium
Disequilibrium
Accommodation
Define Assimilation
Assimilation refers to the schema or understanding that is constructed by the child
Define equilibrium
Equilibrium is when the child’s experience fits with their schema
Define Disequilibrium
Disequilibrium is when a new experience upsets the schema of the child
Define Accommodation
Accommodation is when the child’s schema accounts the new experience and learn from it
Accommodation is when the child’s schema accounts the new experience and learn from it
How children use their experiences to construct their understanding of the world around them
What did Piaget’s conservation theory show?
it showed that:
1) Children under 7 years cannot conserve as they cant think about more than one situation at one time
2) That children can only start to think logically during the operational stage at 7 years.
What does Piaget’s egocentrism theory show?
It shows that until children are 7 years old, they will only see things from their perspective
What test did Piaget use to prove his egocentrism theory?
The Swiss Mountain Test
