Personal Staff
A commander’s command sergeant major and the color guard.
Coordinating Staff
A commander’s executive officer and all of the staff positions the executive officer supervises.
Logistics
A branch of military science dealing with movement of supplies, equipment, and personnel.
Command Channels
The communication route for commanders to transmit orders to all subordinate units; all orders are transmitted in the name of the commander.
Staff Channels
The communication route for staff to transmit information to other staff and subordinate commanders.
What are 3 other responsibilities of the Battalion Commander?
- Is responsible for all battalion activities
- Approves battalion plans and orders

Explain the staff positions of the S1-S5.
S1: adjutant, deals with paperwork and JUMS with promotions, ribbons, and achievements
S2: safety/security, deals with maintaining arms room and keep inventory of all supplies, cleans areas
S3: operations/training, deals with battalion plans, operations, and checks activities with schedules
S4: logistics, deals with supply rooms, uniforms, and keeps track of all supplies
S5: special projects/personal or human relations, deals with public affairs and gets the word out about events/battalion accomplishments
What are 2 other factors that staff organization depends on?
- Activities conducted by the unit: all the duties and responsibilities that make up the unit are fundamental to the organization of staff
- Emphasis on broad fields of interest: they generally cover 5 areas of interest that depend on the activity and mission needed to be accomplished
What are 3 common staff procedures?
- Staff coordination: examining projects and communicating with each other to make sure everything works
- Visits and inspections: visits/informs commanders and conduct inspections to check condition of battalion and make sure things are running smoothly
- Conferences, briefings, and reports: participates in conferences to exchange information and bring important matters to command’s attention
