Intellect
The power of your mind to think and acquire knowledge; mental capacity.
Self-Concept
Identity, your idea of who you are.
Ethos
The guiding beliefs of a person, group, or organization.
Resilience
The psychological and physical capacity to bounce back from life’s stressors and maintain focus.
Mental Agility
Flexibility of mind; an ability to anticipate or adapt to certain or changing situations.
Inquisitiveness
Curiousness; having an inquiring mind.
Innovation
The ability to introduce something new when needed or as opportunities exist.
Tact
The sense of what to say to avoid offending others, hurting their feelings, or making them mad.
Expertise
Special knowledge and skill developed from experience, training, and education.
What is the attribute of character and what are the elements?
a) It is who you are and how you act, and it develops every single day through learning. It also helps you choose what’s right (moral and ethical qualities).
- Army values: LDRSHIP and is very fundamental
- Empathy: ability to relate to others’ feelings (not feeling bad for them) and anticipate how actions will affect them (better interactions)
- Warrior/Service Ethos: guiding beliefs of a program (like LDRSHIP or the AJROTC program outcomes)
- Discipline: controlling your behaviors and doing things even when you don’t want to to build the mindset for your team
When will your identity as a leader form?
- You self-identify as a leader
- You are perceived as a leader by others
- You are a leader in relation to another person
- You have earned a leadership role by an organization or program

- Reflect on your words and actions
- Use mentors to give you feedback
- Think of yourself as a leader
- Think and act with good character
What is the attribute of presence and what are the elements?
a) It is the impression you make on others not only by words but by caring and sharing the team struggles.
- Military/Professional Bearing: find ways/solutions and no excuses (instead inspire others)
- Fitness: take care of yourself and be physically fit. Also take care of your mental health, exams, and be equipped to deal with leader stress
- Confidence: place faith in your abilities to succeed/prevent team anxiety without being too confident or under confident
- Resilience: recover from setbacks even when it’s easier to not; learn from hard times and lead by example
What is the attribute of intellect and what are the elements?
a) To think/acquire knowledge, think before acting/speaking, use the situation to solve problems, and think critically/creatively with sensitivity
- Mental agility: adapt to change in certain situations and think critically to examine a problem in depth and in multiple ways
- Sound judgment: draw rational solutions and not let your feelings get in the way; think consequences through and learn from others
- Innovation: introduce something new as needed or when opportunities arise and develop new ideas for their team and adapt to difficult situations
- Interpersonal Tact: a sense of what to say without hurting feelings or making people mad
- Expertise: special knowledge/skill developed with training; it helps and leaders don’t know all at the start (they learn over time)
What does the intellect element of interpersonal tact include?
- Recognizing diversity (value differences)
- Displaying self-control (controlling their emotions)
- Emotional factors (understanding that people have emotions and using the energy to the team’s advantage)
- Balance (display correct emotion based on the circumstances)
- Stability (remain levelheaded under pressure)
