What does the 2013 Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance System indicate regarding bullying?
20% of students in grades 9-12 experience bullying.
What does bullying include?
- Imbalance of power: use power, like physical strength or popularity, to control others (changes anytime)
- Repetition: happens more than once
What are the risk factors for bullying?
- Perceived as different than peers (overweight, underweight)
- Perceived as weak or unable to defend themselves
- Depressed, anxious, low self-esteem
- Less popular/has few friends
- Does not get along well with others, annoying/mean
What are 3 things you can do if you are being bullied or witnessing someone else being bullied?
- Speak up: tell an adult
- Stay away from where the bullying happens; stay with adults
- Talk to someone you trust (admin, teacher, parent)
What are the three types of bullying and some examples?
- Verbal: saying/writing mean things (teasing, name-calling, taunting)
- Social: hurting reputation or relationships (leaving someone out on purpose, spreading rumors)
- Physical: hurting a person’s body or possessions (hitting/kicking/pinching, tripping, spitting)
Why is cyberbullying different than other types of bullying?
- It can happen whenever and wherever (24 hours a day 7 days a week)
- It can be posted and distributed quickly to a large audience
- Deleting harassing messages is difficult to do after they’ve been sent
What are some steps you can take if you’re being cyberbullied?
- Don’t respond or forward messages.
- Keep evidence, like times, dates, and descriptions.
- Save/print screenshots, emails, and texts to use as more evidence.
- Block the person from social media, emails, or other accounts.
What could you do to report the cyberbullying to online service providers?
- Review terms and conditions because it often violates the ones established by the sites
- Visit social media safety centers to block people or change settings
- Report it to the actual site so they can take action against the person/account
When should you report cyberbullying to the police?
If there is…
- Threats of violence
- Child pornography or sending explicit messages or photos
- Taking photo/video of someone in a place where privacy is expected
- Stalking or hate crimes
Why should you report cyberbullying to your school?
- It creates a disruptive environment and the information can be used to prevent or respond to bullying.
- Schools are required to address cyberbullying in their policies, and some states even cover off-campus behavior that creates hostility.
What are some effects of bullying?
- Depression
- Anxiety
- Climate of fear/disruption at school
- Suicide
Why do some people bully others?
- They think they’re better than the kid they’re bullying
- They want to copy their friends
- They think bullying will help them fit in
