Delegating
A style of leadership where the leader gives some decision-making authority to others.

What are the basic leadership styles?
- Directing (close supervision/direction that followers normally don’t resent; they understand time constraints and stuff)
- Participating (consult/ask opinions of followers but leader ultimately makes the decision; builds teamwork and only for competent followers)
- Delegating (least interaction and more problem-solving ability/less supervision, but the leader is still responsible for the outcome)
When is the directing style appropriate?
- A leader has little time to complete a task and when he/she is the only person who knows what must be done and how to do it
- A leader must lead people who lack experience at a certain task
When is the delegating style appropriate?
- Dealing with mature followers who support your goals and are competent/motivated
- Certain key team members are able to analyze a problem/situation, determine what needs to be done, and do it
What are the steps for deciding on the most appropriate leadership style?

- Determine the readiness/willingness of your team members.
- Decide on what leadership style to use with team based on readiness/willingness.
When will you want to use all 3 styles or different styles?
- With different followers or in different situations
