What are the nine steps for effective Service Learning?
- Pre-assessment of skills using PSM.
- Determine school/community/national need based on the curriculum.
- Brainstorm and select a meaningful service project.
- Start a learning log.
- Plan/organize details and discuss expectations.
- Participate in the activity.
- Discuss/reflect on experiences (OBSERVATION).
- Discuss/reflect on what you gained from experiences (ANALYSIS).
- Discuss/reflect on what you can do with the information learned (INTEGRATION).
What are the 4 components to Service Learning?
- Choosing a service activity.
- Planning the service.
- Training for the service.
- Executing the service.
What does the first component of Service Learning entail?
It entails choosing a meaningful service activity that integrates the curriculum, possibly using field education to pick programs to include, like:
- You the People
- NICERC Cyber Curriculum
- TeenCERT
What does the second component of Service Learning entail?
It entails planning the essential components and training yourself and others with the knowledge of goals, expectations, and Cadet responsibility. The plans should ensure proper comprehension and should answer the following questions:
- Who will be involved?
- What is involved and needs to be done?
- When will each step take place?
- Where will it all take place?
- Why will we do it?
- How will it work?
(also make sure to figure out admin stuff like transportation and lunch for the Cadets)
What is an example of a good service project plan?
When cadets in Gastonia, North Carolina did a “no stoop garden” for the senior citizens so they could maintain the garden themselves. They planned ahead and took the needs of the elderly into consideration when planning.

What does the third component of Service Learning entail?

What does the fourth component of Service Learning entail?
It entails arriving on time to properly represent your school, understand the task (or inform if you’re a team leader), and alert the person in charge of injuries or issues. You should:
- Ensure you have the correct tools and supplies to complete the service.
- Know the name or names of the contacts for the particular service you are performing.
- Identify alternate group leaders in case there are absences.
- Assign Cadets to work on projects according to their experience and abilities.
- Be thoroughly prepared to complete the task, but be flexible to make changes because things may not go as you planned them.
- Remember, you are there to render a service for you community.
