U2C5L2: Preventing Violence Flashcards
Zero Tolerance
Policy that makes no exceptions for any reason.
Retaliate
To get revenge by doing something bad to someone who has harmed you.
Gang
Group of people who associate with one another to take part in criminal behavior.
Antisocial
Lacking sociable instincts or practices, sometimes violating accepted laws and customs.
What are some risk factors for those who commit violent crimes at school?
- History of violent abuse
- Involvement with illegal drugs, alcohol, or tobacco
- Social rejection by classmates
What are more risk factors for teen violence?
- Bullying: Some victims feel tormented but some direct their violence outward and retaliate in a violent way.
- Gangs: Take part in bad stuff like vandalism while recruiting young people, since their sentences are less harsh. They also feel like that’s the only place for them.
- Guns and other weapons: They make fights more violent, with 1 person dying from gunshots every 17 minutes, and firearm injury being the 2nd cause of death in 15-24 year olds. Put safety locks on guns, keep them unloaded, and take classes to be safe.
- Alcohol and drugs: People who are desperate and in need do violent things, and underage drinking is a big problem. They also majorly impair judgment.
What are 6 things you can do to be and advocate and prevent violence?
- Refuse to bring a weapon/look-alike to school and don’t carry it for others.
- Report any violent incidents or threats to police/school authorities.
- Learn how to manage your own anger.
- Help others settle disputes the right way with proper resolution strategies.
- Welcome new students and befriend others who are left out.
- Sign/start non-violence pledges to promise a safe campus and proper conflict resolution.
What are ways to protect yourself from violence indoors and outdoors?
Outdoors: do not walk alone at night, avoid poorly lit streets, do not carry a firearm or other weapon
Indoor: lock doors and windows when home alone, open the door only to people you know well, never tell a stranger you’re home alone and say your parents are busy and cannot come to the door
